Workplace first aid requirements

The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 continue to require employers to provide adequate and appropriate first aid equipment, facilities and personnel. Employers should carry out a first aid needs assessment to determine the level of provision required for their workplace.

Since 2013, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has not approved individual first aid training providers or qualifications. Employers are responsible for selecting a competent training provider that can demonstrate appropriate course content, qualified trainers and assessors, and suitable quality assurance arrangements.

Current first aid guidance

First aid practice continues to develop as new evidence and guidance becomes available. HSE guidance was updated in 2024, including greater consideration of mental health within workplace first aid needs assessments and guidance relating to life-threatening bleeding. These updates did not change the legal requirements of the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981.

The Resuscitation Council UK published updated resuscitation and first aid guidelines in 2025. Revive First Aid Training keeps course delivery aligned with current guidance and with the requirements of our awarding organisation.

Our qualifications

Revive First Aid Training delivers regulated first aid qualifications through Nuco Training, using qualifications awarded by First Aid Awards Ltd (FAA). Course content and assessment are delivered in accordance with the relevant qualification requirements and current first aid and resuscitation guidance.

Will course content change?

Yes, where current guidance changes. First aid training is regularly reviewed so that learners receive up-to-date information and practical skills. This includes current approaches to casualty assessment, CPR and AED use, life-threatening bleeding and other first aid emergencies.
